Sometimes things conflue (jeez, can that be a real verb?). This week, partner and I discovered a disagreement over this layout:

Then we have these comments in this thread:

Phillip Martin: My rule is a new suit at the four level is a cue bid if you have previously bid NT. Otherwise it is natural. Thus1♥ 1X3♥ 4♣is a cue-bid if X is NT but is natural if X is ♠.

Nick Hughes: 1H - 1S/3H - 4C is contentious

There is a case for this to be ambiguous, could be a cue agreeing hearts. East hasAQxxx, Qx, xx, Axxx

Phillip Martin: I don't think there is a case for any call to be ambiguous.

Peter Fordham: @Phillip M: Isn't an Advance Control Bid (Cue bid out of the blue etc.) ambiguous at the point the bid is made? Clarification arises on the next round of bidding.

John Adams: I have found responding 1♠ to 1♥ to create more problems than it fixes.

Now there is an article at BBO: http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/topic/78999-bid-this-70-slam/

I am happy to say that one of the benefits of Mr. Flannery's much-maligned convention is that we only initiate 1-1 with 5+ , so this auction has a lower frequency for us than for many. But to the point: In the auction my partnership committed, South could've gone ahead. But, y'see, he thought he had made two slam tries and North was signing off, so he was not interested in five-level safety at matchpoints. North thought South's 3 was claiming 6+ and a stiff or void in , and didn't really think about 4.

I think there is a strong case for 3 to be as North thought it was, at least initially, but when South then bids 4, does that not illuminate an advance control bid? If it doesn't, should it?

I am aware of Mr. Gumperz's article at http://bridgewinners.com/article/view/1h-1s-auctions/, and I favor Nebulous 2 as a tool to avoid these problems, but with 5 , it's still a problem. What do you play?
