1st or 2nd round controls - below game only?

All,

I was meandering through my old Bridge Worlds - I find I often extract more value on a repeat read.  I came across this in the November 2002 issue, Challenge the Champs section.

Versace - Lauria bid as follows.

Like the other pair, they got too high to 6, but that's not the point.

In the notes, it said Verace-Lauria cue 1st 2nd round controls together, but only below game.  Hence, the 5 bid was needed to confirm first round control of that suit.

I thought I played the same or a very similar style of control-bidding, but this would not be true for us.  So, for any fellow Italianate Turbo/Kickbo style bidders, is the truth

  1. The Bridge World description was wrong - Lauria only bid 5 because there wasn't another convenient control-bid to make, but he wanted to keep slam alive, or
  2. The Bridge World description was right and would remain right today, or
  3. The Bridge World description was right, but Versace - Lauria have now changed their methods, so it would no longer be true today, or
  4. Other - please explain?

I haven't done this as a poll as I'm not looking for an opinion, but rather, an explanation.
