A Great Read

On the first day of the USA1 final of the Michael Seamon Junior USBC, KAPLAN (Adam Kaplan, Christian Jolly; Zach Grossack, Oren Kriegel; Ben Kristensen, Kevin Rosenberg) took a 27-IMP lead over WEI (Hongji Wei, Yichen Yin, Yewen Fan, Nian Si, Chang Liu, Che Shen) after the first eighth. WEI won the second and third segments to trail by 1 IMP going into the last set of the day.

In that segment, WEI started strong, taking the lead on the first board. After a back-and-forth set, WEI led by 9 IMPs with four boards to play, but KAPLAN went on a 39-0 tear to finish out the day. This board helped (rotated; click NEXT to follow the play):

Zach won the heart opening lead and cashed two high clubs, getting the news. East discarded a diamond fairly comfortably, so Zach drew a nice inference that East had started with five diamonds.

He finessed the Q, led a diamond to the ace, and ducked a heart to West. West cashed his hearts, as Zach threw a spade, but then he was stuck. A club play would give Zach two extra tricks, so West tried the 10. Zach won the J and played Q, club, claiming the last two tricks with the A and the 10.

+600 was a good result on this board, but Ben and Kevin did even better at the other table. North-South reached 5, were doubled, and went down three. +800 and +600 sent 16 IMPs to KAPLAN, which led by 30 at the halfway point of the match.
