A pretty ending
(Page of 3)

Not remotely constructive but I thought the ending of this particular hand was very pretty.

I was playing in a low standard club duplicate with my girlfriend and we reached 3NT via a simple 1NT (11-14) -3NT auction

The defence started well by leading 10 to knock out the A and then also ducking the A.  I decided I might as well continue even though I had no certain entry back to dummy.  At this point E must have thought W's 5 discard on the Q was encouraging as he came out the slightly strange 2 which ran to my 7.  Although this made no difference to the number of spade tricks I made, it proved very relevant to the later ending.

I cashed 2 more top but didn't really want to make another discard from dummy on the last one.  So I continued with A, Q which West won.  The defence cashed their two top clubs and I could now claim with the position on the next page.

A pair of jacks in each hand, and all 4 were high!

Making 9 tricks was below average since several tables had not managed to knock out the A before the were set up (I suspect E had tried a lead after a 1-2-2NT-3-3NT auction or something similar).  But the ending was so cute I really didn't mind (we ended with 67% anyway!)
