Matchpoints club game.

South led the King of Diamonds. three, nine, spade two.

West played three rounds of trump, South followed, East followed two rounds and sluffed a club. North followed to one round and played the jack and six of diamonds.

West played te heart queen, two, six, won by North with the King. North then played the seven of diamonds.

At this point declarer looked at the North's convention card. Under leads Ace was circled from Ace King.

West played a smalll club,, South won the Ace and dummy played small diamond.

East west took two more club tricks. declarer ruffed the third club and pitched a heart on the queen of diamonds for down two.

West called the director and asked about the lead of the King from Ace King when the card was marked Ace from Ace King.  Said it influenced his play on trick six.  South might have thought he was end played.  He had no spades, couln't  lead a heart away from the jack, was worried about leading a club from the king jack into the queen on the board not knowing where the ace was.  Therefore South may have underled the diamond king.

North said that it was common expert practice to lead King from Ace King in contracts that are at the five level and above, and that it was not necessary to put that on the card, and there is no place on the card for it. South pointed out that there was no damage because the alternative line, ruffing the diamond and taking a second heart finesse would also fail because the heart jack was with South.   In fact if declarer  trumped the diamond and took another heart finesse he could go down three. if South led a club from the king jack into the queen on the board

South also said,"when I saw you looking at the card. I knew what you were looking for, knew what the card said, but I couldn't say anything. "

Director let the result stand.    Director agreed lead of king from ace king against five level contract is common expert practice. (Is this correct?)  She also said issue was moot because alternative line would reach same result or worse.

Take this as a teaching moment.  What should have the parties have done?

If North had the jack of hearts should the ruling have been different?  No place for it on poll, but comments welcome on this or all aspects of the situation.

Let us postulate that West would have been better off bidding four spades on his first bid, and passing five diamonds.  This poll is about defensive opening leads and how they should be handled

, no one did anything wrong.
North south should mark their convention card to show lead of king from AK in five level or above contracts.
result should be down one.

other, just because there multiple choice answers can't cover the field.
