Ambiguous Double

You see a few of your friends playing against each other and witness the following auction:

S

1NT

?

1NT was for the minors.  You look at the N/S card and see that a support double was available to South.

What do you think North's double means?

What is North's expected diamond length?

What is North's typical hand?

As South, what sort of hands would you be likely to pass with at IMPs? at matchpoints?

This sequence stemmed from a recent Bridge World Master Solvers Club problem where we believe the discussion of a double was inadequate.
