After a 15-17 1NT, South hesitated (no reason) and tried puppet Stayman. North denied a five-card major (says nothing about a four-card major), and 3NT.

E-W play high-encouraging, high-low-even, and high-encourages-led-suit-Smith, with standard honor leads (King power lead). East leads the J.

- J - 2 - 5 - A

- 2 - 9 - J - 7

- 5 - 10 - K - 3

Declarer claims.

  • West said he couldn't be sure of the diamond count, but was convinced East had the K (West thought 9 = positive Smith for the heart king), and so was planning to take the third diamond and then switch to the spade queen.
  • East said he was unlikely to have the heart king, and was just signalling (with the 9) that he didn't really mind a heart continuation.
