It is worth pointing out that South was a pretty clueless performer, a fact well known to both West and East.

East and West were playing standard signals.

The opening lead was a trump. Declarer pulled  three rounds E discarding the 7, before leading his to the J,K and A. East returned a small diamond, won by declarer's A, who then tried a low .
