Whilst 6 is a good contract, it is still the third best slam.  Playing in either diamonds or NT, declarer has time to investigate the distribution and assess the best way to play the clubs.  Playing in clubs, it is a guess.

The auction:

1NT 11-14 at this vulnerability

2 game forcing with slam ambitions suggesting a balanced hand (there was no systemic way of showing a 5-4 minor two-suiter with two doubletons - 5-5 was catered for as was 5-4 with a major singleton)

3 lowest four card suit in a hand suitable for slam (2NT would have shown an unsuitable hand)

3 and 4 natural

4 and 4 control bids

6 terminal

It should be noted that, had South's major suit lengths been reversed, 7 would have been the best contract.

North was more at fault
South was more at fault
North and South were equally responsible
No blame - given their methods, North and South did well to reach a decent slam
