Blue Ribbon Pairs, Day 3, First Session, Bidding Competition
(Page of 32)

You have a pick-up partner for the Blue Ribbon Pairs. You agreed to play 2/1. You have made it to Day 3. Obviously no surprise to you; your partner has been very consistent and conservative in bidding and play.

Note: I didn't play in the BRP, but have to set the scene somehow.

I took the hands, and decided where there was a bidding decision to be made.

I then wrote up the hands, removed all the other information, then went back and compared my decisions and presumed final contract with the actual results from the event.

I scored it on a 0-10 scale corresponding to the actual rounded percentage (0-100%).

The vulnerability for the boards is shown in the bidding table. Remember to factor this into your bidding. You will be sitting in all seats during this competition.

You will get your share of luck. Pick a series of heads/tails to start with. Write down your first 10 heads/tails decisions. Make sure you write down your H/T decisions before you go to the next page.

I have no idea if there is interest in these kind of write-ups. If there is, click on the Like button, I may do some more. If not, I still may do some more...

There is little to this hand for the bidding or defense.

A couple of pairs went overboard to 5, but not you.

Score: If you pass, score 0. If you bid/force to the 5 level, score 3. If you bid to the 6 level, score 1. If you bid to the 5 level, and your next two heads/tails picks are both heads, score 8 - the opponents at your table defended badly.

If you bid 5 you are raised to 6. If you play in 6 you are down 1 because you will misguess trumps. If you are in no trumps, you are with the crowd. 11 in NT, 8 took 12 or more tricks. 3 didn't. We will put you in the group of 8. However, of the 4 in 6NT, only 2 made it. If you bid 5NT, partner will raise to 6NT. If you bid 5NT or 6NT, pick heads or tails.

Most likely the opponents have 8+ hearts. This is not a risk free balancing double, but you generally should not let the opponents play at 2 at these colors.

Score: 5 if you pass and defend 2. They make. Score 10 if you doubled.

Deals like this can cause large swings. Compton/Ginossar - the eventual second placed pair - doubled 2 and set it 2 for a top. If declarer plays on double dummy lines and goes down 1, then Compton/Ginossar score 30%.

Not very often that you have a pre-empt stopped three times so your LHO must have values outside diamonds. Put them on a 7 card diamond suit and something outside. Partner has just enough and both heart finesses are on. You lose the first 4 club tricks.

A tough decision. You can't invite after a 2NT opening bid. You have 5 HCP, no aces or kings, but some fillers. Is 25 HCP, a ratty 5 card suit and no aces or kings good enough for the BRP? So, do you or don't you? Silly question, everyone in the BRP knows that you only need 25 HCP for a NT game. Everyone bid to game.

Score: 5 if you bid to 3NT, 0 otherwise.

This is a classic matchpoint battle. Your partner is in second seat, will have an opening bid. Everyone knows that you have an 8 card heart fit. You know that they have at least a 7 card spade fit, possible 8. You 'know' your side has 20+ HCP.

2 should go down 1, but everyone made it. You were unlucky - half the tables did not balance after 2; unfortunately they did at your table.

Score: 2 if you pass, 0 if you double, 4 if you bid to 3 (you are doubled and down 1).

I expect bids all over the place for this. 8 card suits are not that common.

You could be sneaky and pass. Hope to take the first nine tricks on defence against 1NT. That would be +150, however it doe not work out on this board.

Score: 0 if you passed. You thought you would take the first 9 tricks, but the diamonds don't run. If you bid 3 or 4, score 7. However, if your next pick is heads, you will be doubled. If you bid 3 score 9, if you bid 4 score 10.
