Bringlish
(Page of 2)

"Bringlish" is what Kit Woolsey describes in The Language Of Bridge as the English exposition of the meaning of a bid, or an auction. Today, our opponents had this auction:

Before the final pass, I asked that the bid cards be left out. They were, though South scooped hers all together. Then I asked for an explanation of the auction. I got a review, each player saying her partner's bids in order. I told them I could see the auction, what I wanted is to know what it showed. "Which bid do you want to know about?" "All of them." "There's nothing special." It was clear they didn't have a clue, so I gave up. Among other things, North's sequence looked to me like a responder's reverse, which IMO would be forcing to game, but South apparently didn't think so, hence her obvious reluctance to bid over 2

My attempt at translating this auction to Bringlish would go "I have at least 3 diamonds and some 12-21 points". "I have at least 4 hearts and at least 6 points". "I have 4 or 5 diamonds, some 12-18 points, and 4 or more clubs. My suits might be 5-4 or 4-5." "I have five or more hearts, 4 or more spades, longer hearts than spades, and at least a good 12 points. We're going to game." "I guess notrump is our best spot; I don't have 3 hearts or 4 spades." The reluctance I mentioned was probably because she didn't think game was on, regardless what her partner thought. Or perhaps she didn't think responder's reverse was forcing - if she noticed it at all. Anyway, I'm curious if others here agree with my translation, or would have a different one.

They were playing a fairly uncomplicated 2/1 strong NT system, BTW.

I'll post all four hands on the next page, so you can see if your Bringlish (or mine) matches up. :-)

3NT was down 1, so south's reluctance was correct, as it happens.Cool
