Charlotte Does Things Right

I had the pleasure of playing in the Charlotte Summer Sectional last weekend. It could not have been a more pleasant experience. Everyone was friendly and welcoming to us out-of-towners. The directors and caddies were excellent, as was the playing space. The tournament organizers went out of their way to welcome us, and even helped us find partners for the Swiss. At every table we were greeted with a smile and told how glad they were we had come.

The number and quality of volunteers was astonishing. They put out a great spread every day. Including Krispy Kreme donuts in the morning!! And homemade desserts galore. I can't begin to imagine the hours of baking that went into this tournament.

This is exactly what bridge needs to thrive: friendly attitudes, selfless volunteers, and good food. It makes a difference when you feel welcomed and wanted in a new place. Think if we could make new players feel that way. It makes a difference when a bridge tournament -- or club game -- has a friendly feel, is a place you look forward to visiting. It's not great for the waistline, but I can live with that.

So thank you, Charlotte, for making us feel at home. I hope to be back next year!
