N/S are world class players. Playing Precision.

E/W are expert players.

Screens in use.Contract = 5 doubled. 11 tricks.

West and South are screen-mates.  West described his bid as and .

East and North are screen-mates.  East described his partners bid as preempt

I was called after the board was finished.

E/W had convention card but this special bid was not mentioned.

North said if he had known about and  , he would not have doubled 5.

South said if partner would have passed, he knows that partner does not have defence values for  and  and then he would bid 5 and then ending in 5.

I ruled misinformation case. N/S were damaged.Weighted score. 75% 5. 11 tricks 25% 5. not doubled. 11 tricks.

I did not include 6 doubled 11 tricks in the weighted score.

Questions to be asked...

1. Is it likely that North would pass 5 if he knew west has ?

2. Is it very serious error by North to double 5? (Law 12C1e)

3. Is it likely that South would bid 5 if North passes 5?

4. Is it likely that West will continue to the 6th level?

5. Is South damaged by the information of and holding?

Appeal committee ruling...

Table result re-installed. 5 doubled 11 tricks.

East gives North correct explanation of partners 4 bid, both according to the convention card and normal bridge understanding.

None of the appeal committee members ( and two more players, outside the committee ) has seen 4 bid in this bidding sequence as  and .

South should and did realize that something strange was going on and is therefore on his own in the bidding.

In fact the main reason for the damage is North's double of 5 which mislead partner.

It is clear that West confused himself very much, which is not an infraction, and this time he himself was very lucky.
