Analysis by Craig Hemphill

If South raises preemptively, it is debatable what North should do facing competition to the four level. The correct answer depends on where South's likely side strength, limited though it will be, might reside.

When the side strength consists of two defensive tricks in clubs, the correct answer is to pass or double -- but the likelihood is that North will bid on.

Now we are engaged in a game of "chicken." Well East fear that 4 will be made and bid 5? South will double to secure his top.
