Analysis by Craig Hemphill

Frequent Saturday readers will understand South's 2 bid as Flannery showing typically a 45xx pattern with lower range opening bid values (below reverse strength). That explains 2, but West's 2 bid requires some imagination. The Flannery opening should for the most part deter a 2 overcall, but West can counter with a 2 "cue bid," suggesting playable spades and both minors!

North can overcome West's imaginative bid with a straightforward 3 bid, and it is most unlikely that East can find a 3 bid. . .

A Flannery triumph?
