Analysis by Fred Ferguson

If Board 1 was a sad deal for East/West, then this is a sad deal for North/South. On this deal N/S could take 9 tricks for 3NT, but with 9 spades N/S will most likely play in 4 (hold this thought) which does not make.

Bidding* South with 6 spades opens the bidding 1 and North with 9 high card points balanced and 3 spades responds 2. South with 16 hcp and 5 losers (typical for the values), in the auction here, makes a natural (long suit) game try of 3. Others might make a different method game try like a Hardy Game Try of 2NT or short suit game try of 3, but with 9 hcp, North would most likely accept any game try from South. With a balanced hand and the Q, North should accept the game try from South by bidding 3NT, but most will just bid 4. If North does bids 3NT then South might, just might playing pairs, accept the 3NT and pass, but holding AKQJ86 many will correct to 4 anyway.

Play* There is just no way to play this hand and legitimately make 4. The AJ6 is sitting over the K and the AJ4 is sitting over the K. Unless E/W just give it away, 4 should be down 1.
