Analysis by Robert Todd

North has a really interesting hand with lots of possibilities, and probably should just go ahead and open it 1, although 4 isn't out of the question. East overcalls 1, and South doubles. West makes a cuebid limit raise with 2, and North bids 3 or maybe even 4. East goes straight to 4, so South has to decide whether to go on - he probably doesn't like his void in partner's suit and his 3 small , and they're red, so he probably just passes. Without confirmation of the fit, North probably passes too. If North had jumped to 4, though, South would have a much easier 5 bid.
It turns out that 5 would have been a good sacrifice (and actually has a really good chance of making! - the defense has to lead to tap the dummy), but that's really really hard for NS to diagnose. Here in 4, declarer loses 3 tricks, although it might be hard for the defense to untangle things - North has to lead , get South a ruff, return a , and get South another ruff OR South leads a , North returns a for South to ruff, and now East still has a loser also. Otherwise declarer can lose just 1 and 1 - which means 5 could also make.
