Analysis by Robert Todd

South opens 1 and West passes. North probably rubs his eyes to make sure he's seen partner's bid correctly, and then has a really weird hand to bid! If he had any shortness, a Splinter would be great, but he doesn't, so he has to choose between a 3 limit raise and a game forcing bid. Over the limit raise, South does have the shape and what he thinks (little does he know!) is extra trump, so he goes to game, but that's it. Over a game forcing bid like Jacoby 2NT , South shows his shortness, and then as they cuebid and back and forth, they have a chance to get to the untouchable 21-point slam.
Of course it happens that South's singleton is perfect with the opposing AKs and the 12-card fit, so the only loser is that !
