Analysis by Fred Ferguson

Nothing is easy this week.

Bidding: East deals and with 13 high card points and just 5 losers opens the bidding 1. North/South are silent throughout. West responds 1 F1 and East rebids 1. West now bids 2 as Fourth Suit Forcing (4SF) artificial and game forcing GF. East rebids clubs to show length in clubs and West now supports spades with 3. With no better bid East bids 4. West bids 4NT as RKC Blackwood and East responds 5 showing 2 keycards and the Q. West is happy to bid slam and chooses 6. Some might choose 6NT with West holding KJ9.

Play: Sure enough declarer (East) is put on the spot with the opening lead of the 5. East determines that South would be more likely to be leading away from the Q than from the A and plays the J from dummy. After the A and clubs split 3-2, it is easy to set up dummy's club suit.
