Analysis by Fred Ferguson

Systems, systems, systems! So many times you might see me write, depending on partnership agreements, yada yada yada. This deal greatly depends on partnership agreements.

Bidding: East with 19 high card points and a balanced hand might consider opening the bidding 2NT. But with 5 losers a more common action, as in the auction here, East will open the bidding 1 with the plan on rebid to jump to 2NT showing an 18-19 hcp balanced hand with 5-6 losers.

After East opens 1 and South passes, West would like to find some way to preempt clubs, but unfortunately playing standard bidding 1-3 is a forcing bid and playing some form of Inverted Minors the Jump Shift in the other minor has artificial meanings, and thus, West passes. North balances 1NT, East reenters the auction with a reopening double (for takeout) and South cuebids 2 showing both majors. Now is the time after first passing West can bid 3 and when partner cuebids spades as a forcing bid, West just bids 4.

Losing Trick Count does not claim to operate for notrump hands, but the knowledge of the number of losers in a balanced hand may be vital if a trump fit is found, such than the loser expectancy can be gauged.

Play: With the lead of a heart, the play of this hand is is not difficult, as in the club play here North/South have the opportunity to win QJ with declarer (West) pitching a spade on a diamond i.e., loser on loser. With the lead of a spade (difficult to lead away from AJ9x when the strong hand is on side) the play could get tricky where declarer must finesse North for both the QJ to make 4.
