Analysis by Fred Ferguson

Another fun filled minor suit auction!

Bidding: North deals and with 14 high card points and 7 losers (standard opening hand) opens the bidding with 1 (better minor). East with the best hand at the table 17 hcp and 4-4 in the majors could easily over call 1NT or, as in the auction here, makes a Takeout Double . Give East one more diamond KQx and clearly 1NT would be the better option. After East Takeout Double or 1NT, depending on partnership agreements, South's bid of 2 would be a simple raise and 3 would be a preemptive raise. The 3 bid is made here in an attempt to keep East/West out of hearts.

Play: The play of this deal is not hard whether East overcalls 1NT or makes a Takeout Double, pretty much all the missing values can be assigned to East hand. Declarer (North) wins the opening lead of the K in dummy with the A, and with limited entries to dummy leads the J playing West for having the Q instead of the A. East wins the A and is stuck for a lead ... West can cash the Q but anything West leads is away from values giving up a playing trick: cant lead a heart away from the K, leading a club sets up 2 clubs in dummy so West leads the K. All East/West win are the Q, Q and the A.
