Analysis by Fred Ferguson

For many partnerships this may be a difficult deal to reach game. For partnerships who do not make 3-card rebid raises the bidding on this deal might go as below to reach 3, and in fairness 3 might be the optimal (most favorable) contract.

1 - 1
2 - 3
3 - All Pass

Bidding: Playing 3-card rebid raises, the deal might go as in the auction here. North with 14 high card points opens 1 with the plan to rebid 2. Partnerships who play Minimum Offshape Takeout Double s (see Special Doubles) might have East make a Takeout Double based on values (Savannah Double), but in the auction here, East passes. South responds 1 and North with 3-spades raises to 2. South's bid of 2NT (Spiral) is artificial a query asking North to further define his hand and North's bid of 3 shows 3-card support and with 14 hcp and 17 support points maximal values. South with 13 support points can bid 4.

Spiral simple responses to 2NT (see Board 12)
3 3-card support & minimum values (11-13 hcp)
3 3-card support & maximum values (14-15 hcp)
3 4-card support & minimum values (11-13 hcp)
3 4-card support & maximum values (14-15 hcp)
3NT 4-card support (4-3-3-3) & maximum values (14-15 hcp)
4X (Splinter) 4-card support, singleton/void & minimum values (11-13 hcp)

Play: The play of this deal is tricky. On the opening lead of the 9 declarer (South) plans on trumping two clubs in dummy and making a blind lead from dummy up to the Q. Then cashing 2 diamonds and ruffing a diamond in hand. Only playing on spades once cross ruffs are made.

Analysis by Raad Bunni

West has no real safe lead. So a trump would be a good safe lead. Win the lead and pull trumps in 3 rounds ending in dummy. Lead a and finesse the J when that holds, play a to K and lead another to Q. Cash the A and ruff a . Claim making 4.
