Analysis by Ed Antosz

If there is such a thing as a bad 20 HCP hand then West certainly has one. Her K is of questionable value. Her club cards would be worth more if they were in the diamond suit. Furthermore there is no good way to describe her hand to her partner. Some might consider a 2NT opener however it will then be impossible to convince partner if her distribution afte that bid.

The bidding sequence above shows a hand with at least 18 HCPs. West would prefer to try 3 however that is not forcing (although it is highly invitational) and there is a chance that partner might pass. West wants to be in game.

The defense should keep declarer from getting to dummy. Their first task is to not win the A early. This will in effect prevent declarer from establishing dummy's clubs.

Declarer does not have a source of tricks at the notrump game. She might have four clubs if she can establish the suit and get to dummy. That shouldn't happen. Most will make seven tricks at the notrump game as declarer must lead a diamond to her ten to win two diamonds.
