Analysis by Michael Berkowitz

East opens 1 with 14 points, just a tad shy of a notrump upgrade. South can overcall 1 with a good-enough suit. I love overcalling on the 1-level as it conveys information that might get lost otherwise. West's 1 only promises four of them. North raises to 2. East now makes a Support Double(s) since the auction is still below the 2-level of partner's suit. South passes. Now West has a decision to make. What would 3 mean? It could be to play, it could be invitational, it could be forcing. I don't think partner will know any better than we do. That said, I wouldn't be unhappy if partner passed or bid a game so maybe it's safe here. East isn't sure either so decides that with diamonds covered, he could try 3NT. North might think about doubling this contract to get a heart lead. The K doesn't have to be in West's hand but it rates to be.

If North doesn't double, the contract will come down to the opening lead. If South leads a fourth-best diamond, declarer can win with the 9 and set up a diamond for her ninth trick. The lead of either the J or a heart will find declarer a trick short and possibly down two if she tries to make by taking a spade finesse.
