EBTC: Monaco v England: almost a bore draw

8 flat hands and no more than 3 imps changing hands on another 7.

All of the fireworks happened on board 23:

In the closed room the 'Hel' boys made 5Cx; unfortunately I don't have the auction.

In the open room Robson started with 3C and Forrester bid the obvious 3NT.

Martens then bids 4C to show the majors but his partner Malton thinks it shows 2 places to play (standard in France).

Robson shows his diamond suit and Malton tanks before bidding 4H.

Forrester with the 2-suit fit bids 5C and this gets passed around to Malton who tanks again; eventually bidding 5D.

Its now Martens turn to think!

I think he eventually decides its pick a major and makes the right choice (5S is down 1, 5H down 2) for a match winning 11 imps swing.

There was really only one other board of interest, both sides making 3NT+3 on board 25:

Malton opened 1C, 1D from Martens was a transfer and 1H showed exactly 2 hearts. 2NT was invitational.

In the other room Gold opened a strong NT and Bakshi simply bid Stayman and then 3NT.

Very disappointing.
