Join Bridge Winners
From the CNTCs (#3) - Grands Galore

For whatever reason, it seems each week-long bridge tournament features certain agreements/conventions/treatments/results that appear more than those that we'd expect to appear more frequently. For example, during a regional, you may open Flannery 6 times but not have a simple Jacoby transfer over 1NT come up.

At the Canadian National Team Championships (CNTCs) we saw our share of grand slams during the week, with mixed results. Going through my scorecard, just under 200 hands featured 9 contracts played at the 7 level, all but one freely bid. Here are a few I found interesting:

From an early round robin match, after my partner opened 1S and RHO overcalled unusual 2NT for the minors, I passed, planning on doubling later which we play shows this invitational "negative double" hand. LHO jumped to 5D and while the tray was on the other side of the screen, I thought wouldn't it be cool if partner, red vs white without hearing a peep out of me, bids at the 5 level? Sure enough, the tray came back with 5H from partner, pass from RHO.

Well, I did not want to bid 6D and risk having a "slow" 6H come back, so I just bid 7H. Unlucky, RHO's 2NT bid was on 4-0-5-4 and partner (6-5-1-1 missing the spade jack) could not draw trumps and ruff a spade in dummy. Another outstanding contract down the tubes, lose 13 vs -1430 at the other table.

From the finals, after the Michaels 2D bid, my partner showed a good hand with diamonds then cuebid twice. I figured looking at AKJ-seventh of trump and the club ace was easily enough to bid 7. Partner was looking at:

North
AK76
AKJ6

4

and converted to 7NT, fearing a heart ruff. This was an easy make on a double squeeze for a 2 IMP gain. Interestingly, RHO, an excellent player, confessed he'd have sacrificed 7H over 7D. I would have an automatic trump lead against that and we'd hold him to a remarkable 2 tricks for -2900 (edit: -2300 assuming he delays ruffing in on diamonds to cut off the South hand)

This was perhaps my favourite hand of the tourney, from the quarterfinals:

Did we overbid? Perhaps. LHO leads the diamond 6. Where do you win trick 1? What do you lead to trick 2? What is your general plan? I know it's not the best hand to pose as a problem since you may change horses if certain cards appear. I will add the result at a later time.
