Gazzilli over 1

The Gazilli bid of 2 after 1/1 has been developed the the great Italian players.  Yuan Shen has proposed that the weak option can hold 12-13 with a 6 card suit as preferable to 5M+4

We have been developing an approach to separate non forcing reverses from forcing reverses over a 1 opening, we have found the following works well.  We have developed this in a weak NT context where 1 is 5+ and unbalanced if less than 16.  However i expect this does not make too much difference to the structure.

The non Gazilli reverses are:

1 - 1X - 2/ = 14-16 4/6 shape (concentrated values)

1 - 1X - 3X = 14-16 46 shape or 16-17 45 shape (4 card fit)

1 - 1X - 3 = 14-16 55shape (concentrated values)

1 - 1X - 3/4Y = (13)14-15 6 5 card support + this shortage (single jump splinter)

1 - 1X - 2X = up to 15 3 or 4 card support (2NT is now a GT to uncover the shortage)

1 - 1X - 3 = (14)15-17 6 cards unbalanced (6 cards and balanced = 1NT rebid and 2 check-back finds the extra length)

the weak options have concentrated values so bad 14 is ruled out and good 17 can go via 2.

Gazilli 2:

1 - 1X - 2 is up to 16 with 5+ 4 (this is ambiguous as it may hold 4 rather than 4 when partner has responded 1 but will specifically be 1453 or 2452 since we raise with 3 cards)

1 - 1X - 2 Gazilli relay bid

Weak Gazilli 11-13(14) with 6 (unbalanced hand - since 6332 is in 1NT)

Strong options are 18+ and contain a shortage

1 - 1X

2 - ?

With less than 10 we bid 2.  With more than 10 we bid naturally.  This inversion of the game forcing bid coupled with the weak option enable us to get out in non forcing auctions at a safe level and makes it clear when we are exploring for slam.

Weak

1 - 1X - 2 - 2 - pass = i have 6 unbalanced 11-13 you have less than 10.

1 - 1X - 2 - 2X/Y 3 = i have 11-13 6 unbalanced you have more than 10.

Strong

1 - 1X - 2 - 2Y - 2X 4522 18+

1 - 1X - 2 - 2Y - 3X 45(31) 17+ if we cannot agree the suit at the 2 level this contains 4522

1 - 1X - 2 - 2X/Y - 3/4Z 56 16+ splinters offer at least a 9 card fit and either 2 singletons or a void with 2 singletons we splinter into the lower one so that the void is apparent half the time it exists and partner know to only cue an A in the other suit.

1 - 1X - 2 - 2X/Y - 2/3Z 18+ 45(31) a new suit shows an unbalanced hand with 18+ it may contain a 3 card fragment in X

1 - 1X - 2 - 2X/Y - 3NT 6+ 18+points. Because 3 is weak after partner shows 10+ and we don't want to go past 3NT we use 3NT to show the Strong hand when our shortage is in partners suit. We can also use 4 to show this hand. This is a problematic sequence in that the field may find 3NT at MP we may have to play 4NT or 5.

2NT after Gazilli

1 - 1X - 2 - 2X/Y - 2NT

we use 2NT as a relay to show 46 and 55 hands - as with the non forcing reverses a higher suit is 46 while a lower suit is 55 both 18+.  3 is now a relay and the second suit is shown at the 3 level - a rebid shows 5 and a cue following this agrees while 4 sets the suit as .

1 - 1X - 2 - 2X/Y - 2NT - 3 - 3X = 46 i.e. 4 card support 6+ and 17+

1 - 1X - 2 - 2X/Y - 2NT - 3 - 3Z = 46 or 55 18+

A typical Gazilli auction:

1NT says no 4 card major so it either provides a 3 card fit or 5+.  22 is about the upper limit for a 1 level opening we respond on most 5 point hands
