Hello Bridge Winners!!

Greetings people of the internet!

My name is Nick. I am I 21 year old college student and chess player. You might wonder, What is a chess playing young college student doing on a bridge website? Well, there is no chess club where I live, and I've been itching for some intellectual competition. So I started bridge as my substitute chess.

The transition from playing the 1 vs 1 game of chess to the 2 vs 2 game of bridge has been hard though. In chess every time I make a mistake I let myself down, but in bridge I feel that I let my partner down too. The good news is that my local club has hooked me up with a really great partner who is not only experienced, but also really, really patient.

I have to say that I am loving bridge. I've only played a few times, but it is great! Laughing Not only is playing fun, I'm also enjoying reading about it. (The club director gave me 2/1 Game Force by Grant and Rodwell.)

I'm interested in spending the next year learning to play bridge well, and that leaves me with two questions for you all. First, how does one go about getting good at bridge? I've read Bridge for Dumbies and 2/1 Game Force. I'm also playing twice a week at the club. The problem is that I do not have any sort of battle plan. I'm just sporadically memorizing conventions, and picking up nuggets of wisdom about card play. Do you guys have any advice?

Second, what sort of goals can I set up for myself? I really have no idea. I'd like to have something to work towards, and eventually achieve this year.

I'm also curious about article series and authors on this website that are aimed towards beginners.

Thanks,

Nick
