How do you defend this hand from the world semi-finals?
(Page of 4)

Plan your defense when partner leads the K (promising the A). What do you play at trick one and what would it mean in your system?

So what do you play at trick 2 with North's hand having lead the K? Do you choose differently if partner plays the 6 or the Q or the 3?

Many play that when there is a singleton in dummy, a very low or very high card at trick one is suit preference, and a middle card is either continue or lead a trump (partner hopefully know when to do which). Others play encourage/discourage with the Granovetter obvious shift principle so encourage requests the obvious club shift and discourage suggests partner do something else.

It seems to me that the best plan to beat this is for partner to hold the A and cash it then continue s to protect our spade queen. But there seems no way to tell partner this. Perhaps it is just best to signal for a diamond and hope he figures it out.

In fact most tables made 4 when North shifted to a club since the diamond loser now disappears.

Here is how that went at another table:

Two rounds of hearts make it hard on declarer who then has to guess what to do. At least one table went down in 4 after that start.

But our USA1 declarer Wolpert, after a weak Notrump and partner showing spades, bid 4. Played from the other side South played two rounds of s. Now Wolpert took the club finesse to dispose of his diamond and scored it up that way:
