This hand occurred in the first KO round of the Flight A GNT's in Atlanta.  Our opponents were a good team from District 9, in South Florida, headed by Shussler.

In the auction shown, my decision over 7D was whether to pass and leave partner vulnerable to a bad diamond break or a club ruff on opening lead, or to bid 7NT and risk a different kind of bad break.

I hope you didn't bid 7NT like I did!  RHO somehow found a double, led the spade ace, and thanks to the lucky spade break we lost only the first six spade tricks to go -1400 instead of +1440. 6 was bid at the other table, so we lost 20 IMPs on the hand, instead of winning 11. Net cost: 31 IMPs.

Epilogue:  We lost the match by 27, to the eventual 2nd-place finishers.  Congratulations to District 9 - we enjoyed playing you guys!
