How many 12 card fits can get lost in one hand?
(Page of 2)

Ever had a 12 card fit and not found it?

How about a hand where both sides had a 12 card fit and neither found it?

Here is the story of how I managed in a matter of seconds to bury 12 card fits for both sides.

Playing in a regional pairs game, very good first session, trying to follow it up with a strong second session, the auction started off normally enough:

Where's the alert of my partner's splinter you may ask?

Yes, the 4C bid was a splinter, and a pretty obvious one that I would have expected to recognize 10 times out of 10 at the table.

But this deal was definitely the 11th deal.

You see, this is that hand I was looking at:

After the Michaels bid, I was expecting that my partner likely had clubs. Some chance of diamonds but almost certainly neither major. So when I saw a club bid, I thought yeah, typical misfit hand. Somehow my brain failed to process that it was a jump  It just never entered my mind as a possibility that pard held 4 spades to go with my 8 and a stiff club to go with my void!

Oops.

Perhaps writing this article is some form of therapy for the trauma; the rest of the auction to 5HX is a bit hazy (am I trying to forget the hand? does my subconscious not share my sense of humor at this epic fail?). The only thing we got right in the auction after our first two bids was my partner being ethical and not bidding her spades again. I also can't quite remember how I let them take 12 tricks - not that the defense matters, with our side having 14 winners minimum, the master suit, and control of all suits even beating it a trick was not going to matchpoint well.

After the round I did check to see if they could have had a club slam and if that would have made a difference. The couldn't and it didn't, so the dead bottom we received for our -1050 didn't need any adjustment for the misinformation I supplied.
