humor reprieve

In these rather tense days, a little bridge misadventure can bring some levity. You pick up, N (fourth, none V) in a recent Common Game (Thursday 2/2/17 board 30):

North
Q96532
108
J94
102

and hear the impossible auction:

W
N
E
S
1NT
2
P
?
.

Clearly something has gone awry. I chose to P and the auction continued in this rather bizarre fashion:

W
N
E
S
1NT
2
P
P
2NT
P
3
?
.

It seemed I had just enough for a 3 bid...

W
N
E
S
1NT
2
P
P
2NT
P
3

.

BTW: par on the board is 7x -4. This was the entire hand:

West

North

East

South

Apparently South's minor was also hearts. The explanation seemed to involve E having some clubs in the spade slot originally and S forgetting Cappelletti. I am still not sure why W found a penalty double with one only spade. He did of course hold his side's entire spade stack. The opponents are cold for 7 and three pairs bid 6. No we did not get a top for +530! Some pair was allowed to make 5x.
