2NT = 20-21 Balanced.

How do you handle this hand?

Pass or Bash?

As a starting point, consider a team-match with two tables.

Table 1: Responder will pass, and Opener will declare the hand in 2NT.

Table 2: Responder will transfer to hearts, then bid 3NT. Opener will declare the hand in 3NT when holding exactly two hearts and in 4 when holding three or more hearts.

The results:

  • Declaring side at Table2 (the bashers) will pick up +0.9 imps/board on average.
  • Declaring side at Table2 will win imps on 36 boards per 100 board played and lose imps on 54 boards per 100 boards played.

So bidding game appears to be winning in a team match, despite losing imps on more than half of all boards.

I have used Thomas Andrews' Deal hand generator and double dummy solver to score 100.000 boards. The results posted have been corrected after the first posting.
