Inadvertence in Reno
(Page of 2)

Paul Cornelius and I played boards # 3 and 4 of the 2nd qualifying session of the Silodor Open Pairs against Adam Wildavsky and Doug Doub. I had met these two gentlemen earlier in the week when I was involved in an appeal in the Senior Pairs. We exchanged some light hearted comments on the appeal as we reached for our cards.

Adam ( South ) opened 1, Doug ( North ) raised to 2 and the auction closed with my 2.

Adam led his A, and paused for thought. Then, with due regard for his 8, Adam shifted to a low . Doug won Q and continued T, covered by my J and Adam won his K, and shifted unerringly to a low  completing his devastating rout of my contract. One down earned our opponents 63% of the matchpoints.

I kept my brave face, smiled brightly and congratulated Adam on his fine defense.

Paul ( West)  opened 1. Doug ( North ) overcalled 1, and I ( East ) responded 1. Adam ( South ) passed and Paul rebid 1!!!. Nonplussed, I looked down to see that I had inadvertently bid 1 instead of my intended 1. Chagrined, but relieved, I closed the auction with 4. Doug led a  and as I laid out the dummy I apologized for my inadvertent 1, transferring the contract to Paul. I added jokingly that with Adam off lead perhaps Paul would do better than I in 4

Well, check out the diagram. With Doug on lead there is no way to stop 12 tricks by Paul. With Adam on lead I cannot make more than 10 tricks in 4. As Paul was claiming 12 tricks Doug, with a teasing smile, congratulated me on my "fine" bidding. Adam, tongue in cheek, suggested that the TD be called to censure me for not finding my inadvertence in good time. Plus two earned us 82% of the matchpoints.

My inadvertent bids do not usually have such a felicitous result, and I was quite happy to be lucky against these two players.
