Jackie Matthews: 1936-2016

The bridge world lost a wonderful and much-loved “behind the scenes” person this week when Jackie Matthews died. Jackie was “Mom” to thousands of caddies during the many years she served as caddy mistress for the NABCs. I know that my son still thinks of her as one of his Moms, even though he hasn’t seen her in years. So do several of our better tournament directors, who got their start as caddies.

Those of us in District 21 were lucky to have Jackie running our Regionals for many, many years. She and Tom Quinlan made the D21 Regionals fun, good competition and affordable for all of us in this area. No matter what problems there were, Jackie was always smiling, positive, and upbeat.

For anyone in the Sacramento area, there will be a “Celebration of Life” and bridge game in Jackie’s honor at Bridge Works of Lincoln  https://web3.acbl.org/club/profile?id=00019116580003550222 on October 18th, starting at 11:00 am.

A long article in the first Saturday Daily Bulletin from this year’s Reno NABC is a wonderful memorial to Jackie. Here’s the link, which I think anyone can use to read the Daily Bulletin – the article starts on the front page: http://cdn.acbl.org/nabc/2016/01/bulletins/db2.pdf
