Lyon Finals, Day 1

The World Bridge Teams Championships finals began in Lyon today.

In the Bermuda Bowl, FRANCE (Bessis, Volcker; Combescure, Rombaut; Lorenzini, Quantin) would play a 128-board match against USA2 (Fleisher, Martel; Grue, Moss; Pepsi, Rosenberg) over eight 16-board segments. The teams were dead even, 33-33, after one segment. USA2 took the second set 38-28, but FRANCE came back 35-25 in the third, so the match was tied again at the three-eighths mark.

At the half of the (96-board) third-place playoff, BULGARIA leads NEW ZEALAND 115-57.

The Venice Cup and d'Orsi Trophy finals are shorter: 96 boards over six segments.

In the Venice Cup, ENGLAND (Brock, Brown, Draper, Penfold, Senior, Smith) took a 33-17 lead over CHINA (Huang, Liu, Lu, Shen, N. Wang, W. F. Wang) in the first segment. The Chinese came back in a big way, taking the second segment by 25 and the third by 33, leading 115-73 at halfime.

In the playoff, SWEDEN leads POLAND 82-49.

In the d'Orsi, USA2 (Becker, Graves; Berkowitz, Sontag; Silverman, Wolfson) won the first segment against ITALY (Buratti, Comella, Failla, Mina, Pulga, Sabbatini) by 12, the second by 2, and tied the third. The Americans lead 86-72 at halftime.

In the bronze medal match, SWEDEN is ahead of INDIA 86-57.

All the matches except for the Bermuda Bowl final conclude tomorrow.
