Playing at the Bridge Center of Austin's common game last week on Friday, both vulnerable, 2nd seat, I picked up ♠ K43, ♥ KJ7, ♦ 752 and ♣ J953. Nancy and I were playing 8-12 1NT natural, denying a 4+ card major. So I opened 1NT. (The ACBL General Convention Chart bans conventions in response to this opening. So we play the responses 2♣ 3+♣ forcing, 2♦ 3+♦ forcing, 2M 5+M not forcing, 2N invitational to 3N, 3 of a suit natural, 5+cards in the suit and invitational strength.) Nancy chose 3♠ on ♠ AQT986, ♥ 96, ♦ Q843 and ♣ 6. When the dust settled, we made 8 tricks.
The opponents were shut out and missed their heart game which with East on lead requires a club lead, declarer trying a first round heart finesse and a club continuation to beat when declared in the North.
