NABC Attendance decline

What's going on with NABC attendance?

The Las Vegas NABC tablecount was 16616.5 which is well below even the most pessimistic predictions of the organizers and compares unfavorably to all previous Las Vegas tournaments:

  • 2014 Las Vegas Summer NABC: 16616.5 tables
  • 2008 Las Vegas Summer NABC: 19720 tables
  • 2001 Las Vegas Fall NABC: 16818 tables
  • 1991 Las Vegas Summer NABC: 24221 tables
  • 1985 Las Vegas NABC: 19827.5 tables

Is there a general downturn in NABC's?   Maybe:

  • Toronto dropped from 16100 in summer 2001 to 13200 in summer 2011
  • Reno dropped from 14950 in spring 2004 to 12200 in spring 2010
  • San Francisco dropped from 14850 in fall 2007 to 13400 in fall 2012

But maybe the drop is only for the popular venues because the smaller venues don't seem to have taken a big hit:

  • Dallas only dropped from 10300 in spring 2006 to 9900 in spring 2014
  • Orlando increased from 12000 in fall 1998 to 12650 in fall 2010
  • Chicago increased from 13000 in summer 1998 to 13400 in summer 2006
  • Atlanta decreased from 13450 in summer 2005 to 12350 in summer 2013
  • Phoenix increased from 12450 in fall 2002 to 12550 in fall 2013

My sense is that the ACBL has generally done a good job tweaking the NABC schedules and there are more members in recent years, so that leaves as possible reasons:

  • the value of NABC's has declined for the average member
  • air travel is less flexible in recent years and/or hotels are more expensive
  • better/worse efforts of tournament organizers
