Oldest age to become really good?

In chess, it seems accepted that a player who doesn't become a grandmaster by age N will never make it, where N is somewhere in the low-to-mid twenties (at least, that's my impression--- I could be wrong).  What about bridge?  Things are a little vague, but I'm wondering about examples who began having tournament success at the national level relatively late, and was NOT doing so as a client on a team full of bigshots.
