Oren's Bols Tip
(Page of 3)

I had this hand to play in a round robin match in the senior trials:

North
J1073
K97
K4
KJ104
South
AQ
A42
QJ6
A8732

I got the opening lead of the 3 of hearts, ostensibly fourth best.  How would you plan the play?

I found a very safe line.  I played small from both hands at trick 1, and won the heart return in dummy.  Club to the ace, and club to the jack.  When this lost and a spade came back, I went up ace, unblocked the clubs, and knocked out the ace of diamonds to guarantee 9 tricks. If East has a third heart I would have been safe, as the defense could take only 2 hearts, 1 club, and 1 diamond.  With the clubs 2-2 and the king of spades onside, I lost a couple of overtrick IMPs.   But I did make a mistake.  Do you see what it was?

Remember Oren's Bols tip:  When ducking, duck high.  I forgot to duck with the 9 of hearts.  This would have been a good idea, since LHO had led low from QJ10xx.  Had I done this I could then have safely maximized my plays in the black suits and made 12 tricks.
