Questions for theorists

Consider the two auctions:

A) (1) - 1 - (2) - X  and

B) (1) - 1 - (2) - X, or similar.

The standard treatment is that double in A is responsive showing the two unbid suits (or two places to play), but double in B is a high-honor raise of spades (generally 3-card). Of course in both auctions the opponents are showing a single-suit fit.

Is this the best use of double? I suspect so, but am not certain.

Should 2NT, instead of X, be something artificial by partner?
