This was hand 3 of the CommonGame June 1, 2017 afternoon. The club suit lends itself to some interesting observations. First, expert defense is for both East and West to duck the eventual club lead. This restricts declarer to two tricks in the suit. With any other play, declarer can bring home the suit for 5 winners. Now consider this: what if declarer has Kxx? If his intent is to take 5 club tricks, he must be prepared to finesse at trick two. Well then it must be right to finesse at trick 1! Finessing at trick 1 will of course lose to singleton queen, but it will virtually always win against an expert West holding Qx, at 3-1 odds.
