Despite losing the match, Dutch junior Veri Kiljan can be proud of himself after executing a rare trump coup in the Round of 64 of the Spingold Knockout Teams at the Summer NABC in Las Vegas. Playing for Team Rosenberg against the favourites from Team Cayne, Kiljan arrived in the normal 4H. It's easy to make with all cards in view even after three rounds of spades, which it got.

You just ruff high and take a first round finesse in trumps. However, it's normal to cash two top hearts and after that it looks like you must lose a heart and a club for down 1.

Alfredo Versace had discarded a diamond on the third spade and now the stage was set for the trump coup. Diamond to the ace, diamond ruff and a club won by the ace. Versace exited with a club to dummy and Kiljan ruffed another diamond before he crossed to dummy with a club. With two cards left West was caught in the trump coup with 108 in hearts under declarer's Q9.

At the other table, Ben Kristensen defended better than the great Versace when he discarded a club on the third spade. Now it takes a first round heart finesse to make. Di Franco doesn't have x-ray vision and cashed two high hearts as one would, but now the trump coup doesn't work.

Fine declarer play by Kiljan when he got the opportunity and excellent defence by Ben Kristensen. That gave Rosenberg 10 IMPs, but sadly for them it wasn't enough to win the match. Cayne had a very convincing fourth segment and advanced to R32.
