Successful Spec Double

Sometimes we double our opponents because we have them lined up... we have enough trump tricks in our hand to beat the contract... Sometimes if your opponents have an auction that tells you they are stretching their values to bid game, you can speculate a double knowing that (a) its almost impossible they will redouble and (b) they are unlikely to make overtricks.   The following hand from the semi finals, Zia made it very clear to the table that he was stretching to bid game, making an invitation 2NT bid, then taking a while over partners 3 bid (which declined an invitation) and raising to 4. Marty Fleisher knew he had 3 sure Aces, trumps were breaking badly and partner was still a favorite to have about 3-4 points. This is a classic situation for the Spec Double and his reward was +800. The reward was even sweeter because Meckwell's in your face bidding style at the other table got them to 4 going down with the EW cards. This actually would have made except for Bobby Levin's great trump lead and then Meck not managing to see through the cards to take 3 tricks.
