The hand of the century
(Page of 2)

The 25th of February 1978, Heinz GUTHWERT published "The hand of the century" in the Finnish newspaper ITA SANOMAT. Matti VIRMIALA played it as South in the Finnish city of BORGA, near HELSINKI, during a club match.

The Matti's exploit was also reported by the french journalist José LE DENTU. To find his related article (In french), go to http://www.herisson-bridgeclub.fr/pages/divers/donne-du-siecle.html, or use an INTERNET search engine with the following keys: VIRMIALAS "MAIN DU SIÈCLE" (But VIRMIALA, and not VIRMIALAS, is the EXACT name of the player).

I also used this hand for the bidding problem 3182 "Changer son fusil d'épaule"  ("Change one's tactics") on the french website http://www.bridgechallenge.com.

What was the Matti's bid?

An ruff killed 7X (1-P-P-7-P-P-X) at the other table.

At this one, the 3NT bid showed that North flirted with a frail but proud jack, of course fourth.

Matti changed his mind and bit rather than bid 7! Wink

West put all the red cards from his bidding box on the table and led the A.

But squeak! South ruffed and played his master as trumps to overuff West two times.

West was very angry when South took all the tricks, and very hungry too: He ate all his Aces and Kings!
