The Last Chance

We played this hand in a Cayne match on BBO. It is a good example, that we have to think with the declarer's mind to have chance to defeat a contract. My partner was my regular partner, Ferenc Zöld, declarer was Garozzo. Let's see, what had happened?

I attacked with the four of clubs, because heart lead seemed not to be right, because I was too strong for leading to the partner.

Partner played the Queen ofclubs to the 8, Garozzo won it with the Ace and played small club!

Now, it was time to think about. If we don't underestimate Garozzo, partner will have only the Queen of clubs, and declarer wants to establish a club trick still before losing a trick.

Why? It seems to be a borderline contract. Declarer will make 3 club tricks, 2-3 diamond tricks, cca 2 heart tricks, if we are right and he will have something in spades.

So what is he afraid of? It must be spades, cannot be else. He wants us to win trink 2, because it is difficult to play spades from the back of the declarer.

Still better for him, if we duck the clubs.

So I decided to play the six of spades, partner played the Queen, Garozzo won it with the Ace, so declarer must have the Jack of spades.

Now he played small diamond to the Jack, and he played another diamond to the Queen.

Let's count what does he have?

Ace and Jack of spades, Queen of diamonds, Ace and King of clubs, so he has 4-5 points in hearts.

We know, that he has 4 clubs and 4 diamonds.

Considering, that if he had KJ of hearts, he could change to hearts after the club lead, hoping, that East wins it and plays club, it is , very probable, that he will have Ace and probably Jack of hearts.

So our last chance is to play to doubleton Ace and Jack of spades at declarer, so I played the Queen of clubs, and I was very happy, when the Jack came from Garozzo.

As we can see, Garozzo had already 9 tricks, because the complete distribution was:
