After starting this article, decided to see how prevalent asking for a five-card major was with three-card support

The results of the poll below indicate it may only be prevalent when not holding five cards in the other major.

My version of Stayman ignores hands that do not contain a four (or five) card major.

If you can live with that, please continue.

What Do You Bid Over 2NT

2NT - 3 is asking for major-suit distribution

                with 5-4, 5-3, 4-4, 4-3, 4-2, or 4-1 in the majors.

                (5-2 in the majors is reserved for a Jacoby transfer sequence

                 so as to ensure there is no fit in the other major)

Opener's rebids:

3 is showing 4-3 or 4-2 in the majors.

3 is showing a five-card suit.

3 is showing a five-card suit.

3NT is showing 3-3, 3-2, or 2-2 in the majors.

4 is showing 5-4 or 4-4 in the majors.

2NT - 3 is asking for major-suit distribution

                with 5-4, 5-3, 4-4, 4-3, 4-2, or 4-1 in the majors.

 

 

3 shows 4-3 or 4-2 in the majors: 3 is asking if major is spades:

3 shows major is spades - Opener raises with no slam interest.

3NT denies a spade suit.

                                                             3 is asking if major is hearts:

4 shows major is hearts - Opener passes with no slam interest.

3NT denies a heart suit.

2NT - 3 is asking for major-suit distribution

                with 5-4, 5-3, 4-4, 4-3, 4-2, or 4-1 in the majors.

 

3 shows a five-card suit - Opener raises with no slam interest or signs off in 3NT.

 

3 shows a five-card suit - Opener raises with no slam interest or signs off in 3NT

 

2NT - 3 is asking for major-suit distribution

                 with 5-4, 5-3, 4-4, 4-3, 4-2, or 4-1 in the majors.

 

4 shows 5-4 or 4-4 in the majors - Responder transfers to an appropriate major.

 

3NT shows 3-3, 3-2, or 2-2 in the majors - Opener passes with no slam interest.

                                                                          (the odds of missing a 3-5 major-suit fit,

                                                                            if it is a better, are very low)
