The Original Curveball
(Page of 2)

You are playing in a regional knockout event. Since you smell smoke from the table on your left, you infer that you are remembering something that happened a long time ago.

You look across the table and find that your partner looks a lot like Kit Woolsey. His hair is a bit longer and a bit darker, but it does seem to be Kit. You know that you are not Fred Stewart, though, so you can assume you aren't playing Precision.

When you pick up your hand, you see:

North
J9xx
Ax
Qxx
J10xx

Kit is the dealer, and this is the auction you hear:

What does Kit hold, and what would you bid now?

I'll give you a hint. I asked about 15 expert players about this hand. The only one who guessed the right answer was the late Ed Manfield, who was not Kit's partner at the time (though they later formed a successful partnership that lasted about 20 years before Ed's untimely death).

You can find Kit's hand in the Comments in a few days, after you have had a chance to work it out. (This really did happen, though I was a kibitzer at the table, not Kit's partner.)
