Three Card Majors
(Page of 3)

The Open and Open+ Charts ( http://web2.acbl.org/documentLibrary/about/181AttachmentD.pdf ) ban in segments of fewer than 6 boards, an Artificial 1-level opening bid showing length only in a known suit other than the one opened, unless that bid is also strong and forcing. "Length" is defined as 4+cards in a suit. So a 3+card major system may be permissible regardless of the number of boards per segment.

Why 3-card majors? Novelty. Should be fun.

Here are the main bids of the proposed system:

1st/2nd

1 or 1 = 10+ 3+ artificial

1 = 10+ 3+ 0-2 artificial

1 = 10+ 0-2, 0-2 artificial

From there you could do standard style with 1NT strong, 1 10+ 5+ either major, 2 strong, 1 level bids 10-21, etc. You could play Precision style with the 3+ bid at 1 and 1 strong, the other three bids limited, 2 natural, etc. Or even strong diamond style. That's my preference. That looks like the following:

1 = 3+ 10-14 artificial

1 = 15+ forcing, artificial

1 = 3+, 0-2 10-14 artificial

1 = 0-2, 0-2 10-14, artificial (mm, or 7+--can't promise 4 or it will fall afoul of the showing length rule)

1NT = 10-12 or 12-14 depending on vulnerability (if you want to continue the theme have it promise at least one 3+card major)

2 = 5+ 10-14 with at least 2 more than

2 = 5+ 10-14 either 54m31 or 6+0-3

2 = 5+ 6-9 or one quick trick 54m31 or 6+0-3

2 = 5+ 6-9 or one quick trick 54m31 or 6+0-3

2N = 10-14 6

We already opened all 10+ hands so we can up the ranges on the constructive hands and add a couple of pure preempts

1 = 3+ 12-15 artificial

1 = 16+ forcing, artificial

1 = 3+, 0-2 12-15 artificial

1 = 0-2, 0-2 12-15, artificial (mm, or 7+--can't promise 4 or it will fall afoul of the showing length rule)

1NT = 12-14 or 13-15 depending on vulnerability

4th seat: only open these if you think you have a 50+% chance of getting a plus score

2 = 5+ 13-15 with at least 2 more than

2 = 5+ 13-15 either 54m31 or 6+0-3

2 = 3rd 5+ 0-11; 4th 13-15 5+4+ or 55+m

2 = 3rd 5+ 0-11; 4th 13-15 5+4+ exactly one more than or 55+m

2N = 12-15 6
