Toronto Summer NABC Housing Update & other info

The April Bridge Bulletin has hit the streets with a nice cover photo advertising the July 20-30, 2017 ACBL Summer NABC in Toronto.

Unfortunately, housing remains an issue.  Even with the addition of a 4th hotel, all four hotels are virtually sold out.  The odd room is available on the odd day but, for example, anyone trying to book seven consecutive nights at any of the hotels will not be able to.

There were reports of a possible deal with the 5 star Delta by Marriott hotel but apparently negotiations have failed.  I have been informed that: "ACBL was unable to secure a block at the Delta at an affordable rate.  We are looking for other opportunities."

See the ACBL web site for more info: http://www.acbl.org/tournaments_page/nabcs/upcoming-nabcs/toronto-summer-nabc-2017-july-20-30/hoteltransportation/

The Canadian dollar is currently worth 75 US cents.  Conversely, 1 US dollar is worth 1.33 Canadian.  The rate fluctuates daily and by July may be as low as 73 cents or as high as 78 cents.  Impossible to know.  For Americans, converting some US dollars to Canadian dollars at your local bank would not be unreasonable.  Also ensure you have a valid passport for travel.  Best to do it now!

For Canadians, the published entry fees in the ACBL April Bulletin are favourable, a savings of about $1 US dollar per entry in Canadian funds.  For Americans, less so as the ACBL rate is based on an 80 cent Canadian dollar (1.25 CDN for $1 US).  Best to exchange your money at a bank.

Reminder: for those flying in to Pearson, when you exit the baggage area, you may be accosted by individuals soliciting for a cab ride.  Please do NOT use their services.  They are unregulated and acting illegally.  You have been warned.  Legitimate taxis and limos can be found outside in the appropriate lines.  Cab fares will run about $50-$60 one way (all rates in Canadian dollars).

By far, the Union Pearson Express is the most comfortable and economical method to travel from the airport to Union Station downtown (across the street from the Royal York).  It is an 8-10 minute walk to either the the InterContinental or the Westin Harbour Castle hotel.  It is a 15 minute walk or 5 minute cab ride to the Hyatt hotel (1.1 km).

The Union Pearson Express is $12 one way for adults;  $6 for Seniors 65+;  free for children 12 and under.

For alternative housing options Airbnb is popular these days at: https://www.airbnb.ca/s/Toronto--Canada?allow_override%5B%5D=&s_tag=Lsavz7mT  There are always deals to be found on Priceline and the like.

Toronto is a great city with amazing restaurants, theatre shows, Toronto Blue Jays, new Ripley's downtown aquarium, and an awesome zoo with Giant pandas  http://www.torontozoo.com/Pandas/

Good luck to everyone looking for rooms. Hope to see you in July.
